Veronica Lario, byname of Miriam Raffaella Bartolini (born July 19, 1956) is an Italian former actress, currently the wife of Italian ex-prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Biography

Born in Bologna, she was an actress of low budget films. In a famous scene in the 1982 film Tenebrae, directed by Dario Argento, she sits at a table by a window with a gun because she knows a killer is chasing her. An axe crashes through the window and chops her hand off. The blood spraying from her arm paints a wall before she is finished off by the killer.

Married on December 15, 1990, Silvio Berlusconi and Veronica Lario have three children: Barbara (1984), Eleonora (1986) and Luigi (1988).

When she was the Italian first lady, Veronica Lario chose to maintain a low public profile. She avoided most public events and meetings and she seldom accompanied her husband Silvio Berlusconi at official meetings. On the other hand she has been well known to have publicly expressed political opinions in contrast with those of her husband, for example on bioethics or defending pacifists protesting the war in Iraq.

Her husband has never been shy of mentioning Veronica Lario on public occasions, and he alluded at least once to a supposed affair between her and opposition politician Massimo Cacciari.

The apology of Silvio Berlusconi

Italian soap opera

The saga continue between the former Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi and his wife Veronica Lario (see La dolce politica and Don’t you wish your MP was hot like me). On Wednesday, Silvio Berlusconi published a public apology but she is far from happy. Mara Carfagna is not the only one, Silvio Berlusconi also flirt with Venezuelan model and TV star Aida Yespica (photo) and said to her that he would «run away to a desert island with her».

Don't cha wish your MP was hot like me?

Mara Carfagna, the Italian member of Parliament who so fascinated former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi that he was forced into a public apology to his wife (see La dolce politica), appeared nude in Spanish sports newspaper AS on the February 1st.

Under the headline "Mara dazzles Berlusconi", the 31-year-old MP from Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party was splashed across the back page of the popular daily paper from Madrid wearing nothing but a fishing net, her breasts barely covered by her long dark hair.

La dolce politica

Veronica Lario, the wife of Italy's former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, chose to make her anger over his flirtations public in an open letter in the roman daily newspaper La Repubblica. She was reacting to comments that Berlusconi made last week during a party about the pretty and young Member of Parliament Mara Carfagna.

Mara Carfagna, a former Miss Italy contestant, who has since appeared as a show girl in numerous variety shows on Silvio Berlusconi's TV channels and entered parliament at the last election as an MP for his Forza Italia! party. She is now a member of the Italian parliament's constitutional affairs committee.
